After its first attempt releasing smartphone, Pantech did it once again by releasing its first CDMA Android smartphone for Verizon Wireless namely Pantech Breakout. It is powered by Verizon 4G LTE network, Android Gingerbread OS, 5MP camera, GPS and many more. In details, here is the review and specification of the phone.
Pantech Breakout
Pantech Breakout comes with full touchscreen design and black matte plastic all around. It is compact and slim measuring 127 x 64 x 12 mm and quite heavy weighing 138 grams. Located on the front is 4 inches capacitive touchscreen with 256K colors support and 480 x 800 pixels resolution. Above the screen is VGA front camera for video call while below the screen are four physical buttons for Menu, Home, Back, and Search function. Two buttons are made of black plastic and two other buttons (Home and Back buttons) on the middle join together in half-moon silver accent. The left side is resided by 3.5 mm headset jack, volume rocker and voice control shortcut button. Meanwhile, the right side is resided by microUSB charging port, power or screen lock button, and camera button. Main camera lens and speakerphone are located on the back.
Pantech Breakout is the first Pantech Android smartphone running on CDMA network via Verizon Wireless. In addition, its CDMA network already supports Verizon’s 4G LTE data network. For internet experience, you can use one of two pre-installed web browser; standard web browsing or SpeedTest.net web browser. Both work very well opening complex web pages as they are supported by HTML and Adobe Flash. Other connectivity available includes WiFi, WiFi hotspot, Bluetooth, microUSB and DLNA connection. There is also GPS navigation system with with A-GPS support and VZ Navigator integration. To be able to running all application smoothly without lag, Pantech Breakout is supported by Android OS v2.3 (Gingerbread) and 1 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor with 512 MB RAM and 1 GB ROM.
Come to camera, Pantech Breakout is equipped by two cameras; a VGA front camera and a 5 megapixels main camera with autofocus. The camera is easy to operate with some selection of settings such as white balance settings, color mode settings, image resolution settings and scene mode settings. Unfortunately, the image quality is rather disappointing; outside images look blurry and lack of color accuracy while inside images seem continue these traits and even grainier as light levels decrease. The camera can also record videos up to 720p resolution with similar quality as the camera. To store data, there is 390 MB internal memory and additional external memory up to 32 GB via microSD card.
Pantech Breakout also comes with multimedia features such as music player and video player. The music player feature is not standard Android one, but Pantech’s own music player. It can play music of MP3/WAV/WMA/eAAC+ formats. Meanwhile, video player supports videos of MP4/WMV/H.264/H.263 formats.
Messaging features of Pantech Breakout include SMS (threaded view), MMS, Instant Messaging and Email. Text input is done using virtual on-screen QWERTY keyboard that works on both portrait and landscape view. Other features available on Pantech Breakout are SNS integration, Organizer, Document viewer, Voice memo, and Java MIDP emulator. To support its performance, Pantech Breakout uses standard battery Li-Ion 1500 mAh that is rated up to 5 hours 47 minutes of talk time or up to 303 hours of standby time.
