BlackBerry Storm2 9550 Review

RIM’s first touch screen Blackberry Storm had become a first attempt in developing the touch screen fields. Although lots of criticizes emerge as well as its flaws, Storm did not lose its charm. And now, RIM is coming back with its new touch screen phone and surely bringing out improvement better than its first one. Meet the successor of Storm, BlackBerry Storm2 9550 aka ODIN.

At first glance, BlackBerry Storm2 9550 does not seem different from Blackberry Storm. It comes out with the dimension of 112.5 x 62.2 x 14 mm and 160 gram weight. A tinted chrome ring attaches around the edge along with rubber side keys. Glossy material covers up the phone and gave a luxurious look. A 3.5mm headphone jack is placed on the side of the phone, and the micro SD memory card slot is underneath the back cover. Front side of the phone are a display of 3,25 inches and 360 x 480 pixels screen without a gap between the screen and the navigation control (call, Blackberry menu, back, end call). The display is TFT capacitive touch screen, 65K colors with SurePress and SureType technology which make the input sensor and typing text become faster and more accurate.

BlackBerry Storm2 9550 runs with the new Blackberry OS version 5.0 in addition of 2GB internal memory plus 256 MB flash memory and micro SD up to 16GB for external memory. When it comes to connectivity, Storm2 make it very well with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and micro USB. Not to mention its data connectivity full support of EGDE, GPRS and 3G.

BlackBerry Storm2 9550 has a 3,15 MP camera with autofocus feature and LED flash and can record QVGA video. The outcome images and videos quality are still average depending on the conditions. No secondary camera appears in front of the phone.

Blackberry OS version 5.0 surely brings some improvement of the phone as seen in the speed of the browser and faster response. The speed browser supports by the enhanced CSS and Javascript. In addition, the double tap action to zoom makes surfing the web an all-round improved experience. The OS also brings improvement on the battery consumption. The Li-Ion 1400 mAh can standby up to 305 hours (2G) / up to 280 hours (3G) and on talk time mode up to 5 hours (2G) / up to 6 hours (3G).

As well as other Blackberry smart phones, its main strengths are still rely on email access via Blackberry Internet Service (BIS) or Blackberry Enterprise Service (BES), along with BlackBerry Messenger, Live Messenger, Yahoo Messenger and so on. Business facilities include meeting schedule application, word pad, document editor, alarm, file storage, etc. Along with its powerful business facilities, its multimedia features are something that cannot be doubt. BlackBerry Storm2 9550 can play music of MP3, WMA and AAC+ format with quite well sound quality through speaker.

Overall, BlackBerry Storm2 9550 has successfully fixed some problems emerge in Storm. But there are still rooms for improvement to make it a better one.
