Joining the competition of touchscreen smartphone market, RIM is adding Torch’s line with touchscreen smartphone named BlackBerry Torch 9850. Claimed to provide some improvement from its predecessor in touchscreen phone, Torch 9850 appears to be one of RIM’s great smartphone. How does it performance? Let’s see the review of Torch 9850 below.
BlackBerry Torch 9850 comes with full touchscreen and candy bar design. The right and left edges of the phone are rounded, but the top and bottom narrow to a fairly sharp point. A large 3.7 inches capacitive touchscreen with 480 x 800 pixels resolution sits on the front side of the phone along with four physical buttons for Call, Menu, Back, and End Call or Power key as well as optical trackpad in the middle functioned as a select key and navigating tool. Right above the screen, there is an LED indicator light. On the right side, there are camera shutter, volume control keys and 3.5mm headset jack. The left side is microUSB charger port. The back side is housed by 5 megapixels camera with LED flash.
BlackBerry Torch 9850 is powered by BlackBerry OS 7 with 1.2 GHz Scorpion processor, Adreno 205 GPU and Qualcomm MSM8655 Snapdragon chipset. Furthermore, Torch 9850 is truly a world phone as it supports CDMA and GSM network. You may choose one network; CDMA or GSM network that suits you best (the two networks cannot work together at once; you must choose one of them). For data connectivity, the phone supports HSDPA 14.4 Mbps and HSUPA 5.76 Mbps or EV-DO Rev-A 3.1 Mbps. Other connectivity includes WiFi, Bluetooth and microUSB connection. There is also GPS navigation system with A-GPS support and BlackBerry maps integration.
Like other BlackBerry series, messaging features on Torch 9850 also give its best performance. The main difference is that is does not have physical keyboard for text input. The only way to input text in Torch 9850 is trough virtual keyboard. Although it is hard to reach perfect accuracy while typing, the virtual BlackBerry OS 7 keyboard does a very good job making correct suggestions and replacements, even with contractions. Messaging features of the phone include SMS, MMS, Email, Push Email, IM as well as its famous BBM 6.
For camera, BlackBerry Torch 9850 is equipped by 5 megapixels camera with autofocus and LED flash. It can capture image up to 2592 х 1944 pixels resolution with a very sharp and clear result. Camera features include Geo-tagging, continuous auto-focus, image stabilization, and face detection. The camera can also record video in 720p resolution. For data storage, there are 4 GB internal memory and additional external memory up to 32 GB via microSD card.
Torch 9850 also comes with some pre-loaded BlackBerry application such as BlackBerry Maps, BlackBerry Podcasts, BlackBerry App World, Password Keeper, and BlackBerry Protect. There is also YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Documents To Go, Slacker Radio, Wikitude, and a Social Feeds application as well as BrickBreaker and Word Mole games. Furthermore, there are more applications and games available through the BlackBerry App World.
Last but not least, BlackBerry Torch 9850 is supported by standard battery Li-Ion 1230 mAh. The battery is rated up to 6 hours 50 minutes of talk time or up to 320 hours standby time.
