HP Palm Pre 3, a Great Smartphone of HP Palm

Following the success of its predecessor, HP Palm released its new Pre’s line namely HP Palm Pre 3. Powered by HP webOS and significant improvement, Palm Pre 3 appears as a great smartphone. Despise its greatness, HP has killed off Palm Pre 3 and make it the last device of Palm. How great is the phone, let’s look at review below.


It is a small size smart phone measuring 64 x 111 x 16 mm and 156 grams with a full touch screen and slide QWERTY keyboard design. The front of the phone is housed by 3.5 inches touch screen. Along its side, there are USB port (charging and data transferring), Screen Lock button, and 3.5 mm headset jack on the right side while the left side is volume control keys. Slide up the phone and there is a full QWERTY keyboard. The keyboard is arranged in 4 rows consisting of 36 keys. First 3 rows are letters and right below the letters are Backspace, Return, Full Stop, Space, Shift, Alt and Sym keys. There are also emoticons included, for quick type. Unfortunately, there is no virtual keyboard available on the touch screen.

Palm Pre 3 runs on webOS 2.2.3 with 1.4GHz processor and 512MB of RAM. The processor and OS make the phone runs faster compare to any Android phone and provides lovely and elegant user interface.

HP Palm Pre 3 is equipped by 5 megapixels camera with LED flash. The camera setting comes with the standard setting and it's really just a matter of pointing and shooting. But what makes the camera very impressive is that there is no lag appeared when capturing image. Just press the camera shutter button, and the photo gets taken right away. The image quality looks great and stunning. The camera can also record video at resolutions of 720p.

For multimedia, Palm Pre 3 has built-in media player for playing music and video. The media player comes with no Equalizer settings. The sound quality is pretty flat as the music sounded as it was recorded. The storage available is only 8 GB internal memory. You cannot add additional external memory since there is no microSD card slot available.

For data transfer, there is USB port connection. Just connect the phone via USB cable and plug in to the PC. The first option appeared is option whether you want to use as USB mode, or simply charge the phone. When it is in USB mode, the phone will show up in PC as an external drive, like any other USB storage device. The problem is, when it's in USB mode the phone cannot make or receive calls or text messages, and all it can do is transfer files.

When it comes to email services, HP Palm Pre 3 does excellent performance. There is built-in Palm’s email account that allows having multiple accounts. There are also Gmail and Yahoo! Mail services provided. Using both personal and Gmail Apps accounts seems very helpful indeed. Furthermore, you may also add an Exchange account that makes it best for those in corporate environments. All of these email services integrated each other and received email is showed in the inbox. This unified inbox works very well and is better than any we have seen on Android. Other excellent features of HP Palm Pre 3 include the ability to syncronize contacts, calendars and mail.

For phone calls and text messaging, the phone comes with the standard features. Social network applications include Linkedin, Facebook and Twitter. Not to mention a smattering of games and applications in the App Catalogue. Overall, Palm pre 3 is a phone aimed at business users who want something with excellent email support and also works well as a phone, not merely be just another BlackBerry user.
