Chevrolet MPV will be called ‘Enjoy’

‘MPV’ name plate shown at Expo was only a temporary name. Will go on sale mid-2012, petrol powered version will be offered initially.

Chevrolet MPV to be called ‘Enjoy’
Chevrolet unveiled its much-awaited MPV based on the Chinese Wuling CN-100 at the Auto Expo in New Delhi. But while that car carried name plates that simply read ‘MPV’, it was only a working title, and Autocar India has learned that the seven-seater will be called ‘Enjoy’ by the time it goes on sale in mid 2012.

The Enjoy will first be launched with a 94.6bhp 1.4-litre petrol, but will get a 1.3-litre SDE diesel – GM’s version of Fiat’s Multijet – at the beginning of next year. GM is hoping to undercut rivals like the Toyota Innova and Mahindra Xylo by a huge margin – targeting a starting price of under Rs 6 lakh.

Renault Pulse review And test drive

renault pulse side view
Renault’s entry into India has been challenging to say the least. Its first offering, the Logan, was a rebadged version of Romanian brand Dacia’s low-cost saloon. It struggled here, and caused Indians to associate Renault with ‘budget’. The fact is the French brand has good equity in Europe, with a vast motorsport and road-car history that spans more than a century.

renault pulse interior view
Keen to properly establish the brand on our shores, Renault promptly handed over the Logan to Mahindra (you now know it as the Verito) and launched a premium product offensive this year with the Fluence executive saloon and the Koleos soft-roader. Of course, this is India, and we thrive on small, frugal hatchbacks, and Renault has been paying attention. So for its third model of the year, it has given us this, the Pulse.

As you can probably tell from the looks, the Renault Pulse is a Nissan Micra; there’s no escaping the fact. Renault-Nissan’s research told them that the general consensus among the car-buying public was the Micra looked too cute, and this was putting a lot of potential male customers off. So to kill two birds with one stone, the Alliance cleverly rebadged the Micra as a Renault, saving on development costs and simultaneously appealing to a whole different kind of customer.

renault pulse rear view
The Pulse sports a large, aggressive grille which gives it a purposeful stance. The rear bumper features a blacked-out section that mimics a diffuser and the hatch has a pair of sharp creases running symmetrically across, converging on a massive Renault ‘lozenge’ logo.

The Pulse is powered by the familiar Renault-Nissan 1.2-litre petrol and 1.5-litre diesel engines, the latter of which we’re testing here. It produces a modest 63bhp and 16.3kgm and on urban roads, is immediately impressive. Initial engine response is good and there’s very little turbo lag. Half-throttle responses are also good and the Pulse ambles along at low speeds rather well. Mid-range performance is healthy and you have adequate passing power on tap. It’s only on the highway that you feel the lack of power and you have to constantly shift gears to keep the motor on the boil. With power tapering off as early as 3800rpm, you have a very small powerband to play with and the Pulse’s performance is a far cry from the likes of the Swift. Our timing equipment confirms this — the car takes a leisurely 16.2 seconds to reach 100kph. The motor is quite refined though; it settles into quiet idle and only sounds gruff when worked hard.

renault pulse front view
What is also very impressive is the Pulse’s ride quality. It competently absorbs rough sections and bad roads thanks to its pliant suspension and tyres. There’s very little bobbing, the suspension works silently and this allows you to drive over rough patches without a care.

Straightline stability is surprisingly impressive. Due to the soft suspension, there is some body roll but the baby Renault is a very neat handler. The steering is really light and comfortable at city speeds and it offers decent feedback on the highway too.

Interior design is exactly the same as the Micra’s and the oval and rounded theme is carried over. You get a round cluster of buttons on the central console, round vents and a round steering boss. There is good amount of space for odds and ends and the door pockets are of a decent size. At the back, headroom and legroom are surprisingly generous and you also get adjustable rear headrests. The only grouse we have with the rear seat is that it’s too low and flat, with not enough under-thigh support. The boot too is fairly generous and the seats fold down, but there’s no split.

The top-end RxZ model we’re driving comes loaded with features, with the notable absence of a passenger airbag, which we would have liked at this price. It also eschews a traditional key for a smart fob and a starter button. Renault also offers climate control and electrically folding mirrors on higher variants. The interior quality isn’t brilliant but it’s good enough for the class.

The Pulse is a very well rounded package and its striking exterior design could win hearts too. It rides and handles well, the torquey motor makes it extremely easy to drive and the spacious and practical interiors just add to the overall package. If they price it right, the Pulse may be the key to making Renault a household name in India.

Mahindra unveils REVA NXR at Expo

mahindra reva nxr at auto expo 2012
Mahindra showcased the production ready prototype of the NXR electric vehicle at the expo. The REVAi successor looks much more appealing and will have more variants too.
The badges of the production version have changed from the large REVA logo on the front grille to the Mahindra logo and the NXR logo with four leaves is used in the rear. The rest of the vehicle remains unchanged. The NXR uses parts from the Mahindra parts bin to keep costs in check. Despite this, making the NXR more appealing has made it a little more expensive. The company expects infrastructure support from the government to source, distribute and charge a range of electric vehicles and subsidy for its EV.
The NXR will be offered with three battery options – small, medium and large – to cater to a variety of driving ranges. There will be two kinds of batteries – lithium ion and lead acid but Mahindra will focus more on lithium ion variants.
Engineers responsible for the NXR’s development have also worked on the Verito electric vehicle. The conventional engine has been swapped with a 29KW (39.4bhp) electric motor. The company claims the Verito Electric has a range of 100km on full charge and a top speed of 86kph.

Mahindra 2 Wheelers' Auto Expo plans

Mahindra 2 Wheelers will showcase its 2012 Moto3 bike and launch the Duro DZ scooter in Delhi at the Auto Expo 2012.
Mahindra racing ended third in the Constructors’ Championship in its debut 2011 season. It had taken the covers off its new 250cc Moto3 entry for the 2012 season earlier in Valencia. This will be the first time that the bike will be unveiled in India.
Mahindra has already launched the Duro DZ in South India and this will be the official launch of the bike in the nation’s capital.
Speaking on the upcoming Auto Expo, Anoop Mathur, President, Mahindra 2 Wheelers said, “The Delhi Auto Expo is the perfect platform to unveil Mahindra Racing’s new Moto3 challenger, the MPG30 (pronounced three-oh). Similarly at Mahindra Two Wheelers, we have significantly enhanced our technological capabilities to introduce high performance two wheelers like the new Mahindra Duro DZ scooter that we have recently launched in the South.”

XUV500 to be dearer by Rs 55,000

new zxuv 500
Three months after its launch, the Mahindra XUV 500 will see its first price revision from January 1, 2012. The quantum of hike will be Rs 30,000 for the base W6 variant, Rs 50,000 for the W8 2WD variant and Rs 55,000 for the W8 4WD variant.
Currently, the XUV 500 W6 is priced at Rs 10.8 lakh, W8 2WD retails at Rs 11.95 and the top-end 4WD W8 variant is available for Rs 14.16 lakh, ex-showroom, Delhi. For all the current bookings, for which deliveries have not been made, the increase would only be 50 percent of the announced price hike.
M&M says the prices have to be increased as they were ‘introductory invitation price’ and there has also been a considerable impact of increase in raw material costs and the rupee depreciation with respect to dollar and euro.
The production for the XUV5OO is as per schedule and the company is also in the process of further ramping up production at its plant in Chakan which will enable it to re-open bookings in January 2012.
M&M received 8,000 bookings for the XUV 500 within a fortnight of its launch. The company started the SUV’s production at a level of 2,000 units per month and is ramping up production to reach 4,500 units per month by June, 2012.

Mahindra to showcase SsangYong range, EVs

Mahindra & Mahindra is to display two models from its newly-acquired SsangYong brand – the Korando crossover and Rexton SUV – for the first time in India at the forthcoming Auto Expo.
The Rexton is a typical old-school SUV based on the tried-and-tested mechanicals of the first-generation Mercedes M-class. It is powered by a 2.7-litre five-cylinder turbo-diesel motor developing 162bhp and 34.8kgm of torque via a five-speed automatic gearbox.
The Korando, a soft-roader built on a monocoque platform, is powered by a 173bhp 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engine and comes with a six-speed automatic gearbox.
mahindra carMahindra will also showcase the all-new Reva NXR electric car and will also have an electric version of its Verito saloon at its stall. Also on display will be the Mahindra-Navistar range of medium and heavy commercial vehicles.
