Android 3 Tablets – iPad Killers?

Acer chief executive Gianfranco Lanci seems to be confident that Android 3 powered tablets are the only answer to the iPad. The company even decided to delay the launch of its Android-based tablets until April 2011 just to make sure that when Acer’s puppies are out, all the proper optimizations are built in its tablets.

 

 

 

Acer’s CEO even admitted that Apple hit the “sweet spot” with the iPad, thanks to its screen size and its intuitive operating system – but he strongly believes that new Android 3 based tablets will be able to fight back: “If I look at Apple, they influence the market on one side, but there is always room for improvement on the other side. [...] Take iPad – when they came out it was without Flash and with certain limitations. With Android products we will fix that. Talking about screen resolution and even in terms of touch, view angles – there are a lot of things where you still have big room for differentiation or improvement compared to Apple.”

Acer’s CEO also acknowledged that Android 2 was not a good answer to the iPad, as even the newest edition, dubbed Gingerbread (aka 2.3), wasn’t meant to power any decent tablet: “Now you can have Gingerbread on a tablet, but we [read Acer] are not convinced it is the right solution.”

Meanwhile, Acer is also working on Chrome OS based tablets, planned to be released sometime next year. Between Chrome OS and Android, it looks like Google is still behind when it comes to powering tablet-like devices, a lag that must rejoice most engineers in Cupertino, CA.

Samsung Galaxy Tab vs. the iPad: Compare For Yourself

The Android vs. Apple battle has officially made its way into the world of tablets.

Samsung took the wraps off its new Samsung Galaxy Tab Android tablet on Thursday. The Galaxy Tab is a 7-inch slate built to complete with the current tablet king, Apple's thus-far-unchallenged iPad.
Sure, there have been a couple other Android tablets on the market already (see Streak, Dell), but the Galaxy Tab is the first that truly qualifies as a contender.

In a nutshell, the Galaxy Tab is smaller and lighter (though rumors suggest a couple of larger editions will debut before the year's end). It has the same speed processor but twice the RAM. Like the iPad, the Galaxy Tab comes with different options for internal storage. It also, however, supports up to 32GB of expandable storage; Apple's device is limited to the internal space only.

The Galaxy Tab has two cameras -- a rear-facing 3.2-megapixel camera and a front-facing 1.3-megapixel camera for video chatting -- while the current models of the iPad have none. Samsung claims up to 7 hours of video playback for the Galaxy Tab; Apple says its iPad can last up to 10 hours.

In terms of software, the Galaxy Tab's Android 2.2 operating system gives the device a number of selling points Apple's iPad can't claim, including full-featured multitasking, support for Adobe Flash, and unrestricted access to applications (Apple is notorious for censoring all sorts of material -- ranging from political satire to swimsuit-clad women -- and also for banning apps that provide functions such as free tethering and customization of the operating system).

Samsung's Galaxy Tab is set to launch in Europe within the next few weeks, then in the U.S. shortly thereafter. Pricing and carrier information for the States is not yet available, though rumors suggest the Galaxy Tab could end up on Verizon.

How to fix the problem of 'waiting' icon on iPod/iPad

Here is how to fix the problem of the never-ending white "waiting..." icon.

1. Press the power button and HOLD IT DOWN, for a long long time. A new screen appears that says "Slide to power off" with a slider.

2.  Slide it. Now your iPod/iPad is truly turned off (instead of the normal sleep-mode type "off")

3.  Reboot it just by pressing the power button again.

Bye bye to the waiting icon.

It worked for me.  Give it a try.  :D

Under the hood, with the exception of the 200HP 2.0-liter TSI unit, it's more about fuel-efficiency than gung-ho performances. The 1.6 TDI four-pot, capable of 105 hp (77 kW), will certainly get most of the attention in Europe, given that it only needs 4.2 liters of fuel per every 100 kilometers (56 mpg US). The second diesel option is the 2-liter 140 hp (103 kW) variant.

On the petrol front, the 2.0 TSI is joined by a 1.2 TSI engine (105 hp) and a 1.4 TSI, the latter delivering 122 (90 kW) or 160 hp (118 kW).

Aside from the 2011 Dodge Challenger SRT8 392 and RedLine Charger, and Fiat 500 that we've already told you about in previous posts, it's worth mentioning that Mopar is reading a luxed-up version of the 2011 Dodge Durango called "Black and Tan" as well as an "Off-Road Edition" of the new Jeep Grand Cherokee.

The Durango's highlights include a special shiny black paint color, Nappa leather seats, 22-inch alloys, a lower suspension and chrome trim, while the Grand Cherokee's features include 33-inch BFG Mud-Terrain tires, skid plates, rock rails and tow hooks. Scroll down for the photo gallery.

Hyundai Equus 2011 Specification Review

The DUB Equus shows surprising restraint. While it wears 24-inch wheels, they blend in nicely with the body kit. Likewise, the grey-black paint scheme is sinister without being SEMA-shouty. Dare we say it? This is one SEMA ride we wouldn't mind spending some seat time with.

Mummbles Marketing, a new custom shop of out Harrisburg, PA, has turned the standard Equus into a luxo-custom it calls the "Elegant Equus." Mummbles didn't just focus on looks, however; some wrenching was done on the Equus' V8 engine, too. Thanks to a turbo kit from Legacy Innovations, a nitrous system and a Magnaflow exhaust, the Elegant Equus now produces 450 horsepower. Mummbles also adds an extra iPad (over the stock tablet the Equus comes with) that controls the air suspension, rear curtains, stereo and windows.

BMW Recall Car Because Sometimes Fail In Fuel Pumps

poised to recall hundreds of thousands of direct-injection turbocharged cars because of high-pressure fuel pump problems. Apparently as a result of an impending story from ABC News (according to ABC—BMW's press department wasn't picking up the phone this morning), BMW is about to upgrade a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) to a full-out recall of several hundred thousand cars.

From the beginning: Starting in 2006, BMW sold several different models equipped with the N54 twin-turbocharged engine, including 135, 335, 535, Z4 and X6 vehicles. This engine is a direct-injection engine. It sprays gasoline directly into the combustion chamber at many thousands of psi of pressure, while most conventional fuel-injected engines spray into the intake tract at pressures between 50 and 100 psi. This requires an expensive high-pressure metering pump, in addition to the conventional pump mounted inside the fuel tank. Some of these pumps have been failing, and when they do, one of several things can happen: the vehicle can stop outright, making for a dangerous situation if you're driving in heavy traffic and can't coast to the shoulder safely. The vehicle can experience poor performance and a severe drop in power, which at least should let the driver negotiate the vehicle to a safe place if not to the dealer for repairs. A less severe failure can make the vehicle go into a "limp-home" mode, with slightly reduced power, accompanied by a checkengine light on the dashboard.

As far back as 2008, BMW issued a TSB to its dealers authorizing them to replace the high-pressure pump under warranty, but only if it failed or showed symptoms of partial failure. According to ABC, BMW will shortly be recalling all of the affected vehicles to replace these pumps, whether they show any signs of failure or not. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration had an official investigation into this matter in 2008, which they quietly dropped, citing that they didn't feel any defect was a safety issue.

Lexus brought along its fleet of custom hybrids to this year's SEMA show, including a host of cars prepped by the likes of VIP Auto Salon. But of all the creations amassed under the Las Vegas sun, the belle of this particular ball had to be the F Sport CT 200h. With its tasteful modifications and satin white exterior, the hybrid hatch is as nice as a factory-backed custom can be. Of course, the winged beast built by the wrenches at 0-60 magazine holds a special place in our hearts, too.

The President of the United States may be the highest target for assassination in the world – hence Cadillac One, his custom, leather-lined tank – but there's no shortage of people in the Middle East who'd bite that the opportunity to take a shot at the Prime Minister of Israel. It comes as no surprise that the Shin-Bet – Israel's national domestic preventative security force – has ordered a new armored limousine to transport the country's head of government.

The duties had been carried out until now by a motor pool of American and German vehicles, accompanied by Japanese SUVs in leapfrog formation (it's a wonder to behold if you're ever seen them in motion), but will soon be taken over by a specially-commissionedAudi A8 Security.

The car is reportedly based on the Audi A8 (likely the long-wheelbase version) with the 450-horsepower, 6-liter W-12 engine, Quattro all-wheel drive, B6+ and B7 ballistic protection, run-flat tires, an independent oxygen supply for the cabin, a fire-suppression system, explosive charges to free the doors in case of shockwaves, a DVD entertainment system, drinks fridge and humidor (Netanyahu's a known cigar aficionado). Those, of course, are just the features we know about, and given Israel's leading position in security equipment, we don't doubt there's plenty more that remains undisclosed. The car is said to cost around $700K from the factory, but add the country's incredibly high taxes – which the government still has to pay, but not on the security equipment – and you're looking at a cool million.

The crowd of automotive fanatics at Cars and Coffee in Irvine, CA rarely gets too excited about a car. Everything from concept cars to pre-production models to dozens of supercars are fairly commonplace at the weekly gathering. Ferraris and Lamborghinis roll by without eliciting a second glance from onlookers, and even the mighty Bugatti Veyron only attracts minimal attention. It takes something unique car get everyone's blood pumping at the most jaded car show on Earth. Which brings us to the the Hennessey Venom GT.

Before today, the car had yet to be publicly seen on U.S. soil, so its appearance at Cars and Coffee was a North American debut of sorts. The initial plan was to show the car at SEMA earlier this week, but delays at customs prevented the car from getting to Las Vegas in time.

To say that the Venom GT attracted attention is a huge understatement. The second the Hennessey crew rolled the car off the trailer and lifted the engine cover to expose the twin-turbo V8, a crowd of inquisitive car geeks formed, drooling over each and every detail of the bodywork.

We try and make it to Cars and Coffee more often than not, but sometimes the lure of a cozy warm bed at 6:00 AM on a Saturday morning makes it just too easy to hit the snooze button. When news came that the Hennessey Venom GT would be making an appearance, we made sure we set our alarm clocks (plus a few backups as well) and joined the rest of the early-risers to see the car in person. We came away with quite a bounty of photographs, which you can see in the high-res gallery below.

The Focus-sized, five-door MG6 is officially on sale next January with deliveries scheduled for March and prices tipped to range between £16k - £20k. A four-door follows in early 2012.

Part-designed in the UK, the MG6 will be powered by a 147bhp 1.8 turbo and is said to be capable of 120mph and 0-62mph in around nine seconds.

The engine is a third-generation version of Rover’s K-series, now re-named N-series, re-engineered with better cooling, lubrication and head gasket.

Chinese-owned MG Motor is shipping knockdown kits of the MG6 to Longbridge for assembly into finished cars.

It takes a lot to make a term like "naked" any sexier, but Aprilia has managed to do exactly that with its latest "naked bike," the new Tuono V4R. A beast of a machine (that looks sort of like an insect), the Tuono is based on the RSV4, but ditches the bodywork for a two-kilogram weight savings and a better view of the 1000cc DOHC V4 engine, which produces 162 horsepower and 81 pound-feet of tire-smoking torque. But the Tuono isn't just about grunt. In fact, it's one of the most sophisticated naked bikes on the market, and it's coming to the United States towards the end of next year.

Keeping all the twist and shout in check are the Aprilia Performance Ride Control and advanced traction control systems. The PRC is a three-position wheelie control system with programmable launch control that employs more accelerometers and gyroscopes than an Apple Store, allowing a little wheelspin out of the corners and offering eight modes that are adjustable right from the handlebars. The traction control, meanwhile, can automatically optimize itself according to the tires you've fitted. Yeah, that's pretty sophisticated. Microsoft Kinect Gutted: Four Microphones, Two Cameras, And One Very Important Fan

Oh my! When the folks at iFixit tore down a Microsoft Kinect they found a strong little fan among the many, many sensors. They suspect that Microsoft's a bit paranoid about heat dissipation after the Xbox 360's red-ring-of death problems.
If you're curious about what's inside this sleek little gadget, here's a summary courtesy of iFixit:

* Four microphones. Four! We've taken apart binaural devices before, but this is our first quadaural sensor setup!
* Three autofocus cameras: Two infrared cameras optimized for depth detection. One standard visual-spectrum camera used for visual recognition.
* An IR transmitting diode.
* A fan. For a 12-watt device, Microsoft seems very paranoid about heat dissipation. This is understandable considering the Xbox 360's red-ring-of death problems. This is a good thing for consumers, but we can't help but wonder if they've gone overboard in the cooling department.
* 64 MB of Hynix DDR2 SDRAM
* A motor. This motor is nothing to write home about. It's quite tiny. Diminutive, even. So tiny that you might want to make sure you keep Kinect out of your toddler's reach, because forcing it to pan could damage the gears.
* A three-axis accelerometer. We suspect this is used to increase the accuracy of the panning motor.
* A Prime Sense PS1080-A2. Kinect is based on Prime Sense's motion detection technology. This chip is the Kinect's brains-all the sensors are wired into here for processing before transmitting a refined depth map and color image to the Xbox.
