Heavy tweeting coming coming from Tahrir

We are seeing some very high tweeting from Tahrir Square in Cairo. Cairo is seeing a Madrid like camping protest, with rises and falls in tweeting but nothing like earlier this year.

Update August 3rd: We are seeing a surge in tweeting at and near Tahrir as Mubarak stands trial.

Tweeting from Tahrir Square Cairo

We have been tracking real time tweeting intensity from Tahrir Square, with levels at hot to hotter all day on our clima.me tweeter meter.

Or use our Facebook App.

Tracking real time tweeting in major Arab cities

Beirut is the city closest to Syria, has the strongest ties, and has the most to gain or lose from the situation in Syria and we anticipate high tweeting the city today.

Tahrir as the de facto Capital of the Jasmine Revolt and the site of pro-democracy protests ongoing. In Cairo scores of over 80 are very high.

Kuwait is a major hub for tweeting and it will be interesting to see if levels raise above their normal highs in the 80s.

Tweeting in Bahrain has fallen massively since the crack down, on a combination of arrests and state terror along with protesters on twitter learning to use identity hiding systems like Tor.

We are starting to see how tweeting may reflect a fundamental set of human rights. When a community like Bahrain's Shia's suddenly stop tweeting we can safely assume that repression of one form is being exercised against them. On the other hand if a community starts tweeting on a sustained level like the people of Cairo we can hope that new freedoms of expression being exercised.

Again twitter is just a tool. Its use needs to be linked back to bigger social processes that are forming history.

LA, the once and future Mexican city ;).

Possibility of another large protest in Tahrir

Friday 15th of April 2011 and we are already seeing elevated levels of tweeting in and around Tahrir Square. Given that we generally see elevated levels of tweeting before protests, and today is the Friday after a very dramatic week in Egypt, we are anticipating a likely large protests in Tahrir Square or an effort by the police to block the square today.

UPDATE, based simply upon the Twitter analysis we are seeing one of the most quite days in Tahrir.

Whats your Geosocial? The Geosocial Universe and Geosocial Networking

Introduction to Geosocial Web
"This infographic, created by Jesse Thomas of digital creative agency Jess3, shows the relative size of social networks and on-line services such as Skype, Gmail, MySpace, Twitter and Foursquare, and also shows the proportion of their user base that access the service via a mobile device. Jess3 has also done a number of other creative visualizations of digital services, including the “Conversation Prism” in collaboration with Brian Solis."

Geosocial Networking is a type of social networking in which geographic services and capabilitiessuch as geocoding and geotagging are used to enable additional social dynamics. User-submitted location data or geolocationtechniques can allow social networks to connect and coordinate users with local people or events that match their interests. Geolocation on web-based social network services can be IP-based or use hotspot trilateration. For mobile social networks, texted location information or mobile phone tracking can enable location-based services to enrich social networking."

What is Clima: Crowd Sourcing for the Geospatial, check it out before you check in

Track the levels of Web 3.0 adoption for any location on Earth with Clima

Clima Tweeter Meter Facebook App

This tool from our Web Lab tells you the overall level of tweeting for any given location in the world. It provides context to the geo-social network. Most current geosocial sites provide location for your friends and social contacts. But one of the great features, or terrible features, of space is that it can be crowded. Sometimes we seek out crowds, like when we want to meet people on a Friday night or participate in a protest. Other times we want to avoid crowds, like when we and some other new parents are meeting for a coffee after a week isolated with our terrible twos. By looking at the overall level of Web 3.0 activity at a location we provide data about the social conditions in a space. People can see if a place is hot and busy (say with a score of 90 or above) or quite and laid back (with say a score of 15)

By looking at the intensity and frequency of geo-tagged tweets we can gauge the "crowdedness" of an area. Now be warned, different people of different ages groups and social background tweet differently. Don't expect a convention of WWII veterans to be producing a lot of tweets. Also a rave full of teens is likely to produce a lot more tweets than a normal high street. But the tool will give you, on average, a sense for where the larger community social activity is located in space. Look for high scores over 80 in big cities and over 60 in smaller cities and developing countries to find locations of heavy social activity.

The Clima suite of tools aims to move the social above the social graph in to a measure of social climate in space. This gives you a way of engaging with a larger community of stranger who you socially collaborate with every day, when you create a crowd or event. Clima aims to provide for geosocial what Wikipedia did for content: finding a way to learn from the wisdom of crowds.

Rather than having to rely on your own network for friends Clima lets you survey the global community to see what places people decide to visit. Each person tweeting from a location is similar to a like in Facebook. It is a vote for a location and using Clima you can count these votes.

Egypt blogger Maikel Nabil jailed by military court

Maikel Nabil was an outspoken blogger of the Egyptian Military

"A military court in Egypt has sentenced an internet activist to three years in jail for criticising the armed forces.

Maikel Nabil was arrested last month for blogs that criticised the army's role during anti-government protests.

The 26-year-old is thought to be the first blogger jailed in Egypt since the ousting of President Hosni Mubarak.

Activists said the trial set a dangerous precedent at a time when Egypt was trying to move away from the alleged abuses of the Mubarak era.

Lawyers representing Maikel Nabil have criticised the conduct of the military court.

Tracking the intensity of Tweeting from Tahrir Square, Egyptian Bloggers often tweet from the square during protests. For Cairo a score of 70 or over indicates a large protest movement or collection of people near the area.

"We are in a state of shock because [on Sunday] they told us the decision would be on Tuesday, so the family and lawyer left. Afterwards the court announced its decision," said Gamal Eid, a lawyer who heads the Arabic Network for Human Rights Information.

Mr Eid said the trial was unfair because the court did not even consider the content of Mr Nabil's blog posts.

He said he would petition the head of the court to reverse its decision and free Mr Nabil. Last week, Human Rights Watch called for the charges against Mr Nabil to be dropped."

Still seeing very high tweeting coming from Tahrir Cairo

With the continue high and surging tweeting from Tahrir (twitter hashtag #Tahrir) it is obvious that a large ongoing Internet organized protests against the Army is happening in the center of Cairo. At one point this afternoon the score for Tahrir reached 80, which was where it was the night Mubarak resigned. Normal for that area would be about 50 on our clima meter.

This has turned violent recently and could do so again at any moment. Hopefully the ability of people in the Square to keep the world informed via mobile web technology and social networks will keep pressure on the American government to keep the Egyptians in line.
