Man Successfully Flies With Custom-Built Bird Wings

  • Using videogame controllers, an Android phone and custom-built wings, a Dutch engineer named Jarno Smeets has achieved birdlike flight.
Smeets flew like an albatross, the bird that inspired his winged-man invention, on March 18 at a park in The Hague.
“I have always dreamed about this. But after 8 months of hard work, research and testing it all payed off,” Smeets said on his YouTube page.
Smeets got the idea from sketches of a futuristic flying bicycle drawn by his grandfather, who spent much of his life designing the contraption but never actually built it.
When Smeets began studying engineering at Coventry University in England, he realized the physics of a flying bicycle just didn’t pan out. Instead, he drew inspiration from Leonardo da Vinci’s wing drawings to build his flying machine. Along with neuromechanics expert Bert Otten, Smeets brought his design into reality
The design is based on mechanics used in robotic prosthetics. The idea is to give his muscles extra strength so they can carry his body weight during the flight.
Smeets (and his arms) did just that today with the help of a pair of 37-ounce wings made out of fabric, according to a press release.
Working with the fabric was difficult because it was very fragile, Smeets wrote on his blog. “It’s important to sew the seams carefully, and give the wing shape extra strength without making it too heavy. The top part of the kite will be folded around the ribs to create an aerodynamic shape. For extra lift and control I’ll stretch a piece of kite fabric between the legs, as some sort of tail wing.”
According to Smeets’ calculations, he needed approximately 2,000 Watts of continuous power to support his roughly 180-pound frame and 40-pound wing pack. His arms could only really provide 5 percent of that, so the rest would have to come from motors. His arms and pecs would basically serve to guide the device and to flap the wings.
He built his electronic, wireless wing set out of Wii controllers, accelerometers harvested from an HTC Wildfire Android phone and Turnigy motors.
When he landed after the 60-second flight, he said, “At one moment you see the ground moving away, and then suddenly you’re free, a really intense feeling of freedom. The true feeling of flying. A [bleep] magical moment. The best feeling I have felt in my life.”

Chocolate cake breakfast could help you lose weight

Eating chocolate cake as part of a full breakfast can help you lose weight, say scientists

LONDON - It sounds too good to be true but new research says having dessert - along with the traditional fry up - burns off the pounds.

Morning is the best time to consume sweets because that's when the body's metabolism is most active - and we have the rest of the day to work off the calories, a new study shows.
Eating cookies or chocolate as part of breakfast that includes proteins and carbs also helps stem the craving for sweets later.

Researchers split 193 clinically obese, non-diabetic adults into two groups who consumed either a low-carb diet that included a 300-calorie breakfast or a balanced 600-calorie breakfast that included a chocolate cake dessert.

Halfway through the 32-week study both groups had lost an average of 33 lbs (15 kg) per person. But in the second half of the study the low-carb group regained an average of 22 lbs per person - while the dessert gorgers lost another 15 lbs each.

At the end those who had consumed a 600 calorie breakfast had lost an average of 40 lbs more per person than their peers.

Although both groups consumed the same daily total calories - the men 1600 calories per day and the women 1400 - "the participants in the low-carbohydrate diet group had less satisfaction and felt that they were not full," said Professor Daniela Jakubowicz.

Their cravings for sugars and carbohydrates were more intense and eventually caused them to cheat on the diet plan.

This also suggests that the dessert group will be more successful at keeping the weight off, said the researchers whose findings are published in journal Steroids.

Prof Jakubowicz said: "But the group that consumed a bigger breakfast, including dessert, experienced few if any cravings for these foods later in the day."

Prof Jakubowicz, of Tel Aviv University, said attempting to avoid sweets entirely can create a psychological addiction to these same foods in the long-term.

A meal in the morning provides energy for the day's tasks, aids in brain functioning and kick-starts the body's metabolism, making it crucial for weight loss and maintenance.

And breakfast is the meal that most successfully regulates ghrelin, the hormone that increases hunger, said Prof Jakubowicz.

While the level of ghrelin rises before every meal, it is suppressed most effectively at breakfast time.
Basing their study on this fact, the researchers hoped to determine whether meal time and composition impacted weight loss in the short and long term, said Prof Jakubowicz, or if it was a simple matter of calorie count.

She said one of the biggest challenges that people face is keeping weight off in the long-term. Ingesting a higher proportion of our daily calories at breakfast makes sense.

It's not only good for body function but it also alleviates cravings. Highly restrictive diets that forbid desserts and carbohydrates are initially effective but often cause dieters to stray from their food plans as a result of withdrawal-like symptoms. They wind up regaining much of the weight they lost during the diet proper.

Ultimately this shows a diet must be realistic to be adopted as part of a new lifestyle. Curbing cravings is better than deprivation for weight loss success, said Prof Jakubowicz.

    UML vs IDEF

The process of business modelling is employed in order tocreate an abstraction of an otherwise complex business. This will enablebusiness stakeholders (owners, customers, management, etc) to gain a betterunderstanding of the business functions and also promote business improvementsand/or innovation.

What is the connection between business and softwaremodelling ?

In order to survive in today's competitive world, businesseshave to continuously review their products, services, and relations with the environment(suppliers, competitors, clients, laws, etc). To assess the quality of theirproducts and effectiveness of their services, businesses rely on theinformation systems. Initially only a support component, the informationsystems have now become an integral part of the businesses. The business itselfmust define the requirements for the information system.

Unfortunately, very often the software system does notproperly support the business. The causes may be: lack of accurate requirementsdefinition, deficiencies in proper business understanding by the softwaredesign team, or even the nature of the business (which may change so often thatthe software simply cannot follow).

Software modelling is an accepted way of designing softwaresystems. By applying the modelling approach to the business itself, accuraterequirements may be achieved for the subsequent software design activity. Thisconcept was taken even further by the idea of using the same modelling languagefor both software and business modelling.

One example of a language that could model both the businessand the software system belonging to the business is the Unified ModellingLanguage, the UML. Many developers are already familiar with UML from modellingsoftware systems. Using one single language across the business and softwaremodelling would promote consistency and communication among modellers and alsotake advantage of a whole range of modelling tools that support the UML.

Translating the business model into a software model is not astraightforward process. Not all the classes and objects defined in a businessarchitecture may be mapped directly to a software model

Here’s a mapping of the IDEF to the UML
    IDEF
    UML
    · IDEF0 : Function modeling
    · IDEF1 : Information Modeling
    · IDEF1X : Data Modeling
    · IDEF2 : Simulation Model Design
    · IDEF3 : Process Description Capture
    · IDEF4 : Object-Oriented Design
    · IDEF5 : Ontology Description Capture

    · Activity Diagram
    · Class Diagram
    · Object Diagram
    · Collaboration Diagram
    · Activity/ State/ Use Case Diagram
    · Class/ Object/ Activity/ State Diagram
    · Meta Object Facility

UML has primarily been conceived with software design inmind, while IDEF have their origins in Computer Assisted Manufacturing. Theinteresting fact is that each of these methodologies is being extended to coverthe other's domain. While UML is being extended now to cover businessmodelling, the IDEF family is added new components that enable it to addresssoftware (and information systems in general) development.

IDEF is coming from the manufacturing / informationenvironment and aims to cover object orientation, knowledge representation andsoftware development.

UML is still in its infancy; it comes from the domain of object-orientedsoftware development but there are increasing efforts to extend it towardsbusiness process modelling.

Which method ? It is up to the user: the task, background, resources, patterns… will all play a role in selecting the right tool for thejob.

5 Ways to Boost Your Energy

    By Cathy Wong,

    About.com Guide

Energy is essential in this sleep-deprived, overstretched, high-speed world. How do we recharge our batteries when there is a constant drain on our resources?

    Tip #1: Try Diaphragmatic Breathing

In Chinese Medicine, energy is called "qi" (pronounced "chi"), and one of the most important ways we make qi is by breathing deeply. Stress, poor posture, a snug waistline, and habit are some of the reasons why our breath doesn't make it down to the bottom of our lungs. Diaphragmatic breathing, also known as belly breathing, is a simple way we can increase our qi energy and improve our stamina.

Tip #2: Get a Good Night Sleep

Most of us know that 8 hours of sleep per night is optimal. But what many people don't know is that the actual time you fall asleep is important too. Sleeping from 1 am to 9 am is not though to be as restorative as sleeping from 10 pm to 6 am.

The reason why is because hormone secretion, body temperature, digestion, and other important restorative processes follow a 24-hour cycle linked to natural light exposure. The later in the evening we fall asleep and the later in the morning we wake up, the more out-of-sync our cycle becomes. If you've ever gone to bed at 3 am and woken up the next morning at 11 am, you may have noticed that you feel worn down and not fully "with it".

Growth hormone is one such restorative hormone. Eighty percent of growth hormone, which is needed for lean muscle, optimum immune function, and strong skin, is secreted during sleep between the hours of 11 pm and 1 am.

Try to go to bed before 10 pm. It may be difficult to get used to getting to bed at an early time, especially if you work late or if night-time is your only downtime and you like to watch late-night television. But you'll be rewarded with increased energy.

For further sleep tips, please read these articles:

Tip #3: Eliminate Energy-Sappers From Your Diet

    • Not enough alkaline-forming foods in your diet - Foods that are alkaline-forming include figs, molasses, green leafy vegetables, almonds, beets, dates, celery, canteloupe, and parsley (this page has a list of alkaline vs. acid foods and explains the concept of alkaline- and acid-forming foods).
In addition to eating these foods, taking 1 teaspoon of a greens powder every morning mixed into juice or a smoothie can also raise energy.
    • Excess sugar - Excess sugar causes fluctuations in blood sugar, which can result in plummeting energy levels. Try to decrease all forms of refined sugar. Watch out for low-fat foods -- many have forms of sugar, such as high-fructose corn syrup, added to make the food more palatable.
    • Insufficent protein - With high-protein, low-carb diets being so popular, it's hard to believe it but insufficient protein is a common reason for fatigue. Pack some almonds and nuts for a quick and convenient protein snack.
    • Too much coffee - Although coffee initially raises stress hormones and gives a rush of energy, consuming several cups or more of coffee per day can promote burnout. Try togradually cut back to one cup a day. If you like the taste of coffee, you may want to try one of these Top 5 Coffee Substitutes. To assess your level of burnout, take the Stress Effects Screening Quiz.
    • Not enough water - One of the most common reasons for low energy is not drinking enough water.
5 Ways to Boost Your Water Intake

Tip #4: Take 20 Minutes Every Day Just For You

Create a daily ritual where you take 20 to 30 minutes for yourself just relaxing and doing nothing (no watching tv or surfing the net). Pick up a book, listen to music, meditate, have a cup of tea, or try a new yoga pose.

    Tip #5: Consider a Stress-Formula Multivitamin

People who are under chronic stress require more B vitamins. A stress formula multivitamin often has more B vitamins than standard multis. B-50 B supplements are also available as a supplement to a standard multivitamin. The B-2 in a B complex can turn urine a bright yellow color. If you haven't checked your multi, grab your vitamin bottle and take this quiz:

Powerful Tips to Improve Your Digestive System's Health

Powerful Tips to Improve Your Digestive System's Health: From a Conversation with Nancy Spahr, CBE & Colon Therapist

    Posted April 29, 2007.
Your digestive health has adirect link to your body's health. In fact, the quality of food you eat affects your quality of life AND energy. Find out how to improve your digestive health.
Your digestive tract...that mysterious 30-foot tube holds more solutions for your health than most of us could ever imagine.
Unfortunately, most of us feed our taste buds before thinking about how it affects our digestive health.
It's true, isn't it? Most of us have received our nutritional education from the media, influencing us with delicious tastes designed to meet every craving and convenience. It's not surprising that we'd forget the correlation between the quality of our food and thequality of our digestive health.
While it seems like a simple formula on the surface, it's much deeper than you'd think. That 30-foot tube which makes up your digestive tract is responsible for delivering the components of what you eat into your body.
So this tube needs to be in good condition to deliver needed nutrients to their critical digestion and absorption points.
In order to understand digestive health better, we talked with Nancy Spahr, Certified Body Ecologist, Certified Colon Hydrotherapist and Certified Natural Health Practitioner. She's studied AND seen it all from what goes in to what comes out at her healing center, Cleansing Waters.

Here are Nancy Spahr's 7 key steps for your digestive health:

    1. Choose high quality, fresh organic foods - Nancy has seen incredible changes when people go from boxed and canned foods to fresh, organic whole foods as part of the Body Ecology program.
      • Incorporate a healthy mix of raw and cooked foods - raw foods have their own enzymes which are especially important when your body is healing and may be low on enzymes in general.
      • Follow the 80/20 rule and have 80% of your plate full of healing vegetables.
    2. Chew thoroughly -Digestion of carbohydrates (starches, sugars) starts in your mouth with saliva and enzymes. The enzymes not only help break down your food, they also attack bacteria. Most people don't chew thoroughly, which makes digestion of food much harder when it reaches your stomach. Chewing is stage one of proper digestion.
    3. Understand the importance of stomach acid (HCl) - Stage two of good digestion happens in stomach and it is your stomach's job is to temporarily hold food and begin to break it down. Stomach acid is important for in this stage of digestion and while it does not actually digest the food, it triggers the enzyme pepsin to break down proteins. The stomach acid also destroys pathogenic bacteria and parasites, eggs and larvae.
      • Aging, poor diet and lifestyle habits can cause an acidic condition of the blood. If your blood is acidic, your stomach thinks it doesn't need to secrete stomach acid.
      • Not enough stomach acid means you cannot digest protein properly. The food stagnates and ferments (the wrong kind of fermentation), setting you up for illness.
      • Heartburn, gas and bloating result from too little HCl, not too much. If you have these symptoms, you could be missing HCl or digestive enzymes. Nancy recommends Assist Dairy and Protein, which has HCl and pepsin to help your stomach do its job of digesting proteins.
    4. Pay attention to digestive enzymes -your food moves from your stomach to your small intestine, where 90% of nutrients are absorbed.
      • Your pancrease produces digestive enzymes so that you can digest carbohydrates, fats and proteins. It relies on the gallbladder and liver for the bile necessary for the digestive process to take place. LivAmend can be useful at this stage of digestion also because it increases bile flow from the liver and gallbladder. Bile is necessary for healthy peristaltic movement and healthy elimination.
      • Taking digestive enzymes with each meal , like Assist SI and Assist Dairy and Protein can help your body digest foods. They improve your body's ability to extract nutrients from the foods you eat. The enzyme, pancreatin, available in our Assist SI, is an excellent enzyme for this stage of digestion. All these enzymes help you avoid the gas, bloating and other digestive discomforts that often result when your body lacks the digestive enzymes necessary to break down and assimilate your foods.
    5. Incorporate prebiotics and probiotics - Your intestines (small and large) are the home of your inner ecosystem, where the friendly microflora (bacteria and yeast) live. The microflora help you digest and assimilate foods and keep your immunity strong.
      • Most people's inner ecosystems are imbalanced, which can lead to leaky gut, an overabundance of pathogenic bacteria and yeast (like candida) and illness. Probiotic-rich fermented foods and drinks add healthy microflora to your intestines, bringing your inner ecosystem back into balance.
      • Including probiotic-rich fermented foods, like cultured vegetables and probiotic liquids has been key to transforming people's health, in Nancy's experience.
      • Nancy always recommends organic, unpasteurized Apple Cider Vinegar with "the mother." An excellent prebiotic, it feeds healthy microflora and aids your digestion. Try it in salad dressings in place of regular vinegar.
    6. Hydrate - Nancy has noticed that many people who first come into her healing center drink a lot of soda and coffee. Some even start their day with these acid-producing beverages and changing this habit can really bring about positive changes in your digestive health.
      • Soda and coffee dehydrate your body, which can also sap your energy. Drinking filtered water, organic herbal teas and probiotic liquids provide energy and hydration.
      • Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine both say that cold drinks slow your "digestive fire" or your "chi" (energy). Since life and healing require energy, focus on room temperature water and beverages or warm tea.
    7. Cleanse and Detoxify - The Body Ecology program goes a long way to helping your body cleanse and detoxify. At Cleansing Waters, Nancy and her team provide a variety of other detoxification services, an important one being colon hydrotherapy. Donna Gates is a huge proponent of colon hydrotherapy as a way to support your cleansing and detoxification.
      • Pay attention to your stool - bowel movements should occur at least once per day and ideally after each complete meal. If you are not eliminating frequently enough, toxins will be accumulating in your colon and also throughout your entire body...right down to each individual cell. Your entire body will look and feel toxic!
      • Cleanse your colon - everyone could use a colon cleanse. Colon hydrotherapy (colonics) is an ideal choice because 10 gallons of water are used to hydrate your colon, softening up hardened fecal matter and sweeping it gently out of your body. This actually allows your whole body to detoxify. Releasing toxins from your colon allows your liver to release more toxins, not to mention all of the cells in your body.
      • Nancy recomnends 2 colonics within the first 48 hours. This allows you to get comfortable with colon hydrotherapy and also allows the water from the first session to soften any old hardened fecal matter to be swept away during the second session. Thereafter, her clients have 2 colonics in the next week and one per week for 6 - 8 weeks. After this, the colon hydrotherapist and client decide upon a maintenance protocol tailored to the client's needs.
      • Enemas are excellent between colonic sessions or as part of your healthy cleansing program. If you are experiencing constipation, gas, bloating, skin erruptions and other symptoms of die-off, doing a home enema can clease toxins from your body right at home and have you feeling more energetic and happier soon. When your body is cleansing faster than it can eliminate the toxins, you will experience the Herxheimer's die-off effect. Stay ahead of your toxins by actively cleansing. Your goal is to smoothly eliminate them in a consistent, steady manner.
      • The Health and Yoga Home Enema Kit is perfect for doing home enemas because it includes a 2 quart stainless steel bucket and a 20-inch catheter that allows you to get water deep into your colon, where it can soften old hardened fecal matter.

Side Effects of He Shou Wu 何首乌

It seems like even TCM may not be without side effects.  Here's some side effects that He Shou Wu, a herbal remedy most widely used for returning gray hair back to its original color, may have.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the herbal remedy he shou wu (何首乌, sometimes known as fo ti) is prescribed to enhance general health and increase life span, but its claim to fame is that it also is said to return gray hair to its original color. The direct English translation of he shou wu is "Black-haired Mr. He." In Chinese medicine theory, the kidneys control the growth and color of hair, and he shou wu is said to benefit the liver and kidneys. A commercial product called Fo Ti does not contain he shou wu but is often confused with it because of the similarity in names. Fo Ti can have severe side effects that sometimes have been attributed wrongly to he shou wu due to this confusion. As with any single herbal remedy, though, he shou wu may have side effects of its own.

    Loose Stools

He shou wu is sometimes used as a stool softener. It contains the substance emodin, which is a laxative and also is thought to be a liver protective agent. If you take too much or are sensitive to this herb, you may get diarrhea. This effect is primarily connected with taking the unprocessed root form of he shou wu.

    Skin Rash

Some people who are sensitive to he shou wu may develop a skin rash. This is rare, but it is a recorded side effect that occurs when high doses of the herb are consumed.

    Numbness

Reports of numbness in the arms and legs have been connected with the use of he shou wu. This effect only occurs when 15 or more grams of he shou wu are consumed in a daily dose, far above those recommended in the professional literature.

    Estrogenic Effect
