How to Release Ear Pressure

Unequal ear pressure can come from one of two things: an ear infection or altitude change. Altitude changes occur while traveling up or down mountains, during under- water activities, while and flying. Altitude changes occurring when the eustachian tube is blocked cab cause pressure in the ear. Normally, yawning or swallowing is the easiest and fastest way to relieve this pressure. Sipping on a drink or chewing gum also frequently work. There is one other way to relieve the pressure.

Difficulty:

Easy

Instructions

  1. Releasing the Pressure

    • 1
      Take a deep breath.
    • 2
      Hold your nose.
    • 3
Breathe out through your nose, causing your ears to pop.
    • 4
Yawn afterward. This usually helps regulate your hearing back to normal, or encourage the ears to pop back to normal if blowing through your nose doesn't.

Tips & Warnings

  • Sometimes only one ear will pop back into the correct positioning of the ear drum. This is normal, and if only one ear pops, continue until the other one follows suit.
  • Do not blow too hard. Increase pressure gradually and stop if it becomes painful, to avoid damaging your eardrum.
