Blackberry 8230 comes up with clamshell design measuring 101 x 50 x 17.5 mm and weighing 102 grams. On clamshell closed mode, there is a 1.6 inches 128x160 pixels color display on the front. When the clamshell opened, there is a nice 2.4 inches 240x320 pixels screen and keypad. The keypad consists of a trackball and a half-QWERTY keyboard, with two letters on most of the keys. On the left side of the phone, there are a mute switch button, a 3.5 mm headset jack, the microUSB port and a convenience key. On the right, there are other convenience key, the volume control keys and microSD slot. The speaker is located on the bottom side of the phone.

Blackberry 8230 is a fine voice phone. Audio reception is good enough. The earpiece and speakerphone are clear, although they aren't extremely loud. The vibrating alert is weak and ringtones are set on middle volume but you can still use your own music as ringtones. It supported by Standard battery, Li-Ion 900 mAh, up to 216 hours on standby mode and up to 3 hours 30 minutes on talktime mode.

Just like other BlackBerry phones, the Blackberry 8230 supports a whole messaging option. Start with standards messaging like SMS and MMS are onboard to multiple email accounts and BlackBerry PIN messaging. Others are preloaded IM clients such as AIM, Google Talk, ICQ, Windows Live and Yahoo Messenger that allowing you to keep in touch with virtually anyone.

Blackberry 8230 is supported by standard BlackBerry features along with its BlackBerry OS version 4.6. Among other features are push HTML email, accurate GPS-based mapping, a built in search option, multi-platform IM, games, and BlackBerry Application World that allows you to download more than 1500 application.

BlackBerry Pearl 8230 runs on CDMA 800/1900 network and CDMA 2000 1xEVDO network. Internet speed with EVDO support is average. For the other connectivity, there are Bluetooth version 2.0 with A2DP and microUSB with no WiFi available. All the application practically run smoothly, thanks to its OS version 4.6 and 128 MB RAM as well as 128 MB ROM.

On the multimedia, Blackberry 8230 equips with a decent music player. It can play music of MP3, eAAC+, and WMA format. The video player performance is not as good as the music player. The camera is located above the external display of the phone. It only comes up with 2 MP camera (1600 x 1200 pixels) with LED flash. Photos output are pretty sharp but videos are rather disappointing, though, low resolution at 240x176 pixels and 15 frames per second. For additional storage, in case that the internal memory is not enough, there is microSD up to 8GB available.
